A single Yuma Ridgway's rail stands in the water in front of reeds at the Las Vegas Wash

Annual marsh bird surveys begin

In April, permitted biologists begin annual marsh bird monitoring at the Wash, surveying emergent wetland habitat for a variety of marsh bird species, with special attention to the federally endangered Yuma Ridgway’s rail.

Although potentially suitable nesting habitat has existed along the Wash channel for many years, field crews rarely detected the species before 2021, despite conducting annual surveys since 2000.

Annual detections of 5 to 7 rails over the last three years represent a significant boost, indicating that the LVWCC and its partners have increased the suitability and availability of appropriate habitat and the rails are taking advantage.
